Phrygian Guitar Scale

What is phrygian guitar scale?

The Phrygian scale (or mode) is commonly used in flamenco and Spanish guitar music for solos and improvisation. It is the third mode of the major scale, meaning it contains the same notes but starts from the third note of the major scale sequence. It’s known for its distinct half-step between the first and second notes, which gives it a unique tension.

The Phrygian mode consists of the following intervals: root, minor second, minor third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth, minor sixth, minor seventh, and octave. Alternatively, this sequence can be written as a pattern of half, whole, whole, whole, half, whole, whole steps. This pattern is unique because it starts with a half-step, creating an immediately darker tone.

What chords can you use it with?

  • Since it is the third mode of the major scale, the Phrygian mode can be used with the chords of the major scale.
  • For B Phrygian, this means it is the third mode of the G major scale. The chords in the key of G major are: G major, A minor, B minor, C major, D major, E minor, and F#/Gb diminished.
  • The Phrygian scale can be paired with various chords, typically creating a darker, tense, or exotic sound. Because the Phrygian mode has a minor quality, it is often used with minor or altered chords that complement its unique intervals.

What happens if you change key?

  • The sequence will remain the same, but the notes and chords for improvisation will change. However, it will still be the 3rd mode of the major scale.
  • If we change the key to C, the scale becomes E Phrygian. This means the starting note will be E, and the chords to accompany this scale will be: C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, and B diminished.
